History of Ribeira do Pombal - BAHIA - BRAZIL
The municipality had its origin from an Indian village quiriris.
In 1667 the Jesuit priest João de Barros and Father Roland Jacob arrived on the scene with the intention of converting the Indians and eventually erecting a chapel with the name of Santa Teresa. With the devotion to the holy and due to a wide peculiar vegetation in the region, the municipality shall initially be called Canabrava of St. Teresa of Jesus of Quiriris.
In 1758 the Viceroy d. Marcos de Noronha e Brito, 6th Earl of Arcos, and the relative affinity quoted Prime Minister of the kingdom, decided by royal charter of May 8 of the same year, the end of all the settlements. As a result the site is a large town and seat board with the appointment of Pombal. In the same year the town becomes city.
In 1760 the village known as Bag of Bats, which belonged to the municipality of Pombal, becomes a town and later city of Bragança, but ends up losing his status and returns to be attached to Ribeira do Pombal.
Ribeira do Pombal became integrated into the city of Cipo in 1931 as a sub city, but was restored in 1933 as current, which was obtained by the decree of the Federal Law No. 311, Article 10, which stated that there could be more a city or village in the country with the same name. With that Pombal is now called officially Ribeira do Pombal 1938.
